Welcome to Our Views on the Housing Market

On February 20, 2011, in Housing, by tejvan

Welcome to a special blog dedicated to the UK and global housing markets.

Since this web site started at the beginning of 2008 and even more so in 2011 there is a great deal of interest in the housing market. There are fears about where people and families will live, how  will they afford their home and if they are owners what may happen to house prices.

In an idiosyncratic manner we explore the economics and finances driving the Housing Market and importantly the social dimensions of treating housing as though it is only a market. In to the mix will be niche articles about housing in history, the intermediaries who survive on the buyers and sellers within the market and sundry other matters of relevance or irrelevance.

Housing has always been a popular topic of conversation, mainly because homeowners took great joy talking about how much house prices had risen. Householders now focus on ability to sell, public v private landlords, availability of finance, costs of running a home, social and demographic changes, government policy and support and lots more.  First time buyers who can’t get on the property market must despair at the difficulties of getting a house.

In the UK, there has been a popular belief that house prices cannot fall because house prices were always keep going up. However, the experience of Japan, Ireland and more recently America suggests that this is not the case.

This blog will still  be looking at issues surrounding the housing market and whether prices are likely to fall or not.
